  • Return to the studio

For many months now as you know, those who could, have continued to produce the Otley & District Talking Newspaper, recording at home. But we have of course missed being together and so we are delighted to let you know that we are heading back to the studio in March. We really hope that you will be able to join us again.

There are two important changes to note. First that with the impending sale of the Methodist church, we have moved to a new venue in Otley - The Chestnuts on Burras Lane. And second, that we are preparing, reading, and recording the paper on a Thursday.

There are several different roles to fill - wallets, editor, producer, reader, and technician. Training will be given if needed and please do ask if you want to know more about any of the roles. Volunteers usually sign up for about once a month.

Covid - we suspect we all have different views on what we should be doing over the coming weeks and months to keep ourselves and each other as safe as possible. We have created a Code of Conduct which we hope strikes a balance between recording together again and taking reasonable measures to protect each other. Do have a read as this is an important part of returning to the studio.

We hope you will be able to return and take up one of these roles. Let us know what you might like to do, and we will be in touch,

  • Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

In light of the ongoing coronavirus event and due to the potential risk posed to our volunteers, we've been forced to suspend recording from our Otley studio. This has also meant that it's not possible to prepare USB memory sticks for distribution, and indeed there are concerns around the potential risk that sending USB memory sticks in the mail may have posed to listeners.

Instead, a number of our volunteers are able to continue to record from home and upload the Talking Newspaper to the website, where the latest and a number of previous recordings are available to all those with internet connections. We do appreciate that not all our existing listeners will be able to access the Talking Newspaper, but the safety of our volunteers and listeners is our priority.

Anybody with a mobile device, tablet or PC and a broadband or 4G data connection should be able to listen to recordings online.

If you are having difficulty please do let us know.

  • Volunteers welcome

We'd love to hear from you if you could spare some time helping the Talking Newspaper. Volunteers are always welcome, particularly those able to help out in the Technician role. This is a role that would ideally suit somebody with IT proficiency although it's not necessary for you to have had experience in a recording studio. The Technician records articles as read by the Producer and Readers, using a mixing desk and Adobe Audition software installed on a PC. A memory stick is then produced and copied to the hundred or so we distribute to listeners. Training will be provided and you wouldn't be left to record on your own until you feel able to do so without assistance.

Other roles you might be interested in can found on our Volunteer page.

If you think you might like to volunteer please contact us, stating the role you're interested in and providing some indication of your availability.

  • Saying goodbye to Mandy

I'm sure our listeners would like to join everyone at the Otley & District Talking Newspaper in offering our best wishes to our outgoing chairperson, Mandy Thompson (pictured, right), who recently stepped down from the role having dedicated several years to helping the TN. Mandy was instrumental in building relationships with listeners, volunteers and donors during her time with us and we're very appreciative for all that she's done.

To bid her farewell various members of the TN joined Mandy at the Wetherby Whaler restaurant this week and a great time was had by all.

Trevor Davey (also pictured) will be chairperson for the coming year.

  • Talking Newspaper AGM update

At our AGM on Tuesday we sadly said goodbye to Mandy Thompson, our outgoing chairperson, and thanked her for her time at the helm. We welcomed Trevor Davey who will be chairperson for the coming year. The rest of the committee were elected en bloc and we welcomed a new committee member, Adam Kingston, who has been instrumental in creating our new website. A special vote of thanks was given to our secretary John Barker who gives so much of his time to our organisation.

There was some discussion and decisions made about how we will deal with the new GDPR legislation. Also, with the new website we discussed potential issues raised by our going online, noting that we will need to check with our readers that they are comfortable about being on the world wide web.

The meeting concluded with tea and cake!

  • Date for your diary: Talking Newspaper AGM

The Talking Newspaper will be holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and all of our volunteers and listeners are warmly invited. The meeting will take place on Tuesday 8 May at 2pm, at the Methodist Church in Otley.

Along with the usual reports and election of officers there will be a report on the impact of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on our charity and we will also discuss our new website.

Perhaps most importantly, there will be refreshments when we will have the opportunity to talk about any issues raised and get to know each other a little better.

If you are hoping to attend it would help with refreshment numbers if you could let us know.
